How Play Supports Early Childhood Development

Play builds the thinking brain

When children sort, build, pretend and test, they are forming the reasoning patterns that later support mathematics and science.

Language grows in play

Dramatic play in particular pushes vocabulary and narrative skills, as children negotiate roles and explain what is happening.

Social skills are practised, not taught

Turn taking, compromise and repair after conflict are learned in the middle of real situations, with a supportive adult nearby.

Outdoor play matters

Running, climbing and balancing build the core strength and body awareness that sitting and writing later depend on. Time outside also supports sleep, appetite and mood.

Open-ended is best

Materials that can become many things — blocks, fabric, water, sand — invite more thinking than toys with a single purpose.
